GRAVIS: Gravitational Reality Axis Value In Sentience — the ontological weight of qualitative experience · Position: the structural configuration of the GRAVIS field in relation to its referent · P1–P4: four possible configurations, one of which is the ground and three of which are departures from it
Introduction to the position system
GRAVIS cannot err. It is a pure measure: the ontological weight of what is genuinely at stake in the Q dimension at any moment. When grief is proportionate to a genuine loss, GRAVIS is registering accurately. When the weight of an encounter is felt as significant, GRAVIS is doing its job. The signal is real.
What can err is not the measure but the position: the structural relationship between the GRAVIS load and its actual referent. The same weight can be accurately coupled to what generated it, displaced onto something else, folded recursively back onto itself, or suppressed below the threshold of registration. These four configurations are the four GRAVIS positions. Together they describe the complete structural landscape of the qualitative field.
Three things are true of the position system. First: P1 is the only position that is not a structural deviation. It is the ground configuration — the qualitative field functioning as it was built to function. P2, P3, and P4 are each departures from P1, each carrying accumulated weight in a direction that moves away from the ground. Second: moving from P2, P3, or P4 toward P1 is always possible. There is no position so accumulated that the ground has been eliminated. Third: P1 is not the absence of weight. It is weight accurately carried. The peaceful field is not the weightless field. It is the field whose weight is proportionate to what is real.
P1 — Proportionate
Signal calibrated to genuine stakes · the ground configuration
P1 is the qualitative field in its natural state: the Merimnaton active and accurately coupled to a real referent, the GRAVIS load proportionate to the actual ontological weight of what is at stake. Fear of a real present threat. Grief after genuine loss. The moral weight of a decision that genuinely matters. Courage in the face of something that genuinely demands it. Joy proportionate to what is genuinely good. These are all P1: the qualitative field registering accurately and the weight directed at its actual source.
P1 is not the comfortable position. Acute grief is P1. The weight before a consequential decision is P1. The full recognition of what has been done is P1. What makes P1 the ground configuration is not that it is easy but that it is honest: the measure is accurate, the referent is real, and the field is carrying exactly what it should be carrying. The therapeutic task in P1 is not to reduce the weight. It is to honour the freedom — to allow the merimnatic superposition to collapse through a genuinely self-authored act rather than through avoidance, displacement, or suppression.
P2 — Decoupled
Signal active, referent displaced · the mechanism of projection
P2 is the qualitative field carrying real GRAVIS weight but directing it at a substitute referent: an object, person, situation, or group that does not carry the actual source of the weight. The signal is genuine. The address is wrong. The anxiety is real — it belongs to an unresolved historical superposition, often developmental, sometimes traumatic, sometimes accumulated across generations — but in P2 it has been detached from its original referent and redirected. What it is attached to does not warrant the weight it is carrying. But the weight is real.
P2 is the structural mechanism of projection, phobia, chronic free-floating anxiety, scapegoating, and the displacement of existential weight onto substitute objects. It is also the primary channel of intergenerational GRAVIS transmission: the parent’s unresolved P2 becomes the qualitative atmosphere of the child’s formative environment, and the child’s field inherits the topological direction of the unresolved weight without necessarily inheriting the original event that generated it. You carry what was not resolved before you.
The direction of resolution in P2 is re-anchoring: returning the GRAVIS weight to its actual referent. This is not comfortable — the original referent may carry more weight than the substitute, and the original event may be more painful than the proxy anxiety. But it is the only direction in which the weight can actually be integrated rather than merely redirected again.
P3 — Self-referential
Anxiety about anxiety · the recursive loop
P3 is the qualitative field generating GRAVIS about the GRAVIS signal itself. The field fears being afraid. It constructs avoidance architecture around the experience of anxiety. Every attempt to suppress the merimnatic signal confirms its danger and adds another loop of weight. This is the highest GRAVIS-accumulating configuration: no cycle discharges, every cycle adds. P3 does not resolve toward its referent because the referent has become the GRAVIS experience itself.
P3 is the structural mechanism of panic disorder (in which the bodily signals of anxiety become the object of anxiety), health anxiety (in which the experience of illness becomes the feared illness itself), rumination (in which the field generates GRAVIS about its own qualitative content), and existential dread loops (in which the fact of having an existential dimension becomes the source of existential weight). In each case, the recursion is the structure: the signal feeding back on itself without discharge.
The direction of resolution in P3 requires dismantling the secondary fear layer before approaching the primary merimnatic weight. The field must first stop fearing the fear before it can address what the fear was originally about. Restoring the merimnaton to first-order function — carrier of genuine stakes, not harbinger of catastrophe — is the necessary first step.
P4 — Suppressed
Field below activation threshold · apparent calm as compression
P4 is the qualitative field silenced below its activation threshold. The merimnaton has been disabled: through sustained pharmacological management, through early-life GRAVIS conditioning that made genuine freedom unsafe, through habituated dissociation from qualitative self-authorship, or through the sheer exhaustion of sustained overload. The field no longer registers genuine stakes. The apparent calm is compression, not integration. What lies beneath is unprocessed GRAVIS accumulated before the suppression began.
P4 is the most dangerous configuration for intergenerational transmission. Unlike P2 (which transmits direction) or P3 (which transmits recursive pattern), P4 transmits compressed weight without shape: the child receives a qualitative field that carries enormous unregistered GRAVIS with no internal direction for its discharge. The weight emerges in the next generation with full force and without the context of what generated it.
P4 is also the configuration that is most easily mistaken for health. The P4 field appears calm, functional, and even productive. The absence of felt weight looks like integration. It is not. The direction of resolution in P4 is careful, supported reactivation: the gradual return of the merimnaton to activation in a container that can hold what emerges. What emerges upon reactivation is not a treatment failure. It is the beginning of integration. The field that re-opens will surface the weight that was compressed. This is the work.
P1: GRAVIS weight → accurate referent → proportionate response → integration
P2: GRAVIS weight → substitute referent → displacement → intergenerational transmission
P3: GRAVIS weight → GRAVIS signal itself → recursion → accumulation without discharge
P4: GRAVIS weight → below threshold → suppression → compressed transmission

Without the four positions, GRAVIS is a measure without a structural map: a field that registers weight but has no formal account of the four ways that weight can be held. The position system is what makes GRAVIS clinically and existentially precise: not just how heavy a moment is, but what structure the field has adopted in relation to that weight, and therefore in which direction resolution lies.
