What it is
When an occasion in M₄ crosses a gate, what arrives in Ϙ is a Qualiton.
It is the elementary unit of registration. Not the occasion, which stays in M₄. Not the crossing, which is the Sensibiliton. Not the field, which is the Primaton. The Qualiton is what has arrived once the crossing has happened: this red, this note, this pressure — registered, complete, and indivisible.
There are five kinds, one for each component of the boundary:

They are not interchangeable and they do not blend. A chromaton is not a faint akouoton, and no amount of one becomes the other. This follows from the disjointness of the gates: if no path runs along the boundary from sight to taste, then nothing arriving through one gate can be a diminished form of what arrives through another.
The Qualiton and GRAVIS
A Qualiton is what arrives. GRAVIS is how much it weighs. These are two questions and two quantities, and the second is not carried by the first.
GRAVIS is not cargo. It is the coupling of an event to the non-zero ground of the qualitative field, and coupling is curvature rather than transport. Λω curves Ϙ; weight is what results from a configuration’s position on that curvature. Nothing is ferried.
This matters because the alternative picture — weight as something exchanged between fields, particle by particle — imports the wrong half of physics. In general relativity, gravity is not a force with a carrier. It is the shape of the space. The graviton is quantum field theory’s attempt to particle-ify that shape, and it has never been detected. The qualitative dimension does not need the attempt.
Why some presences carry more weight than others
You have entered rooms where one person’s presence changed the qualitative register of the entire space. Not because of what they said or did — sometimes they had not yet spoken. The change was felt before the explanation arrived.
Under the current architecture, this is not a special mechanism. It is three ordinary ones happening at once.
The person is an M₄ occasion. They cross your gates as everything else does, arriving as chromatons and akouotons — a face, a step, a silence of a particular length.
What makes the arrival heavy is GRAVIS: the coupling of that occasion to the ground. A field whose accumulated structure is dense with integrated and carried weight is differently positioned on the curvature than one which is not, and the difference is registered rather than inferred. This is what the contemplative traditions call gravitas.
And the fact that you feel it before you understand it is a reading of the field’s own state, not a crossing at all. Weight in excess of what the occasion accounts for is exactly what the Entheusiton reads. The disproportion is the signal. The room’s GRAVIS precedes your understanding of it because reading the field does not wait on the gates.
Unresolved weight registers the same way. The tension before a difficult conversation, the heaviness of an unspoken thing between two people, the specific deadness of a group that has stopped registering what is at stake: displaced GRAVIS, read as surplus.
What it is not
Not a carrier. The Qualiton does not transmit GRAVIS between conscious fields, and GRAVIS is not the sort of thing that is transmitted.
Not the crossing. The Sensibiliton σ is the crossing; the Qualiton is what the crossing delivers.
Not the field. The Primaton Π_Ϙ is the field; the Qualiton is its quantum.
Not a field-reading. Synaisthiton, Entheusiton and Agapiton register the state of the field itself and cross no boundary. They are not a sixth, seventh and eighth Qualiton.
Not divisible by intensity. A faint chromaton is a chromaton. What varies with intensity is GRAVIS, not the kind of thing that arrived.
History
This entry formerly defined the Qualiton as the graviton of the qualitative dimension: the particle whose exchange between conscious fields produces felt weight, with GRAVIS as source and the Qualiton as carrier. That reading is withdrawn entire.
It was withdrawn for the reason the proposed Graviton-Q was retired. GRAVIS is fundamental in the way gravity is fundamental — which is to say it is curvature, and curvature has no carrier. A model that already has Λω curving Ϙ does not also need a particle ferrying the results of that curvature from field to field.
The observations the older entry was built on are unaffected. Presence really does carry weight, rooms really do change when certain people enter them, and the change really is felt before it is understood. What has changed is where those facts sit: with GRAVIS and with the field-readings, not with the Qualiton.
The subtitle “The Particle of Ontological Weight” belonged to the withdrawn reading and goes with it.

Without the Qualiton there is no unit of registration — no answer to what it is that arrives when the world reaches a conscious field, and no way to say that what arrives through one gate differs in kind from what arrives through another. The Qualiton is the smallest complete instance of something being felt as something.
