FLAPDOODLING A FIELD THEORY FOR CONSCIOUSNESS? A Critical Analysis, a Global Effort, and the Art of “Desapego”

Two things have been looked into here, separately and at length: the scientific account of reality, and the spiritual account of conscious experience. Both are, on their own terms, clearly defined.

What has never felt uncertain, from the inside of doing this work, is that the two are parts of one whole rather than competitors for the same space or territory.

The image that has come close to mind to resolve this issue structurally: a hologram and an inner crystal. The exterior — matter, field, spacetime — distributes its wholeness the way a hologram does, each fragment of the surface carrying a partial, lower-resolution trace of the entire pattern.

The interior — quale, feeling, experience, the felt weight of a life — holds its wholeness the way a crystal does instead: one uncut material, cut into named facets only so a person has some way to describe which angle the light is catching, and is able to triangulate his position. Two different grammars for the same completeness. Neither is a metaphor for the other. Both are true descriptions of how a whole shows itself, depending on which side, angle or distance of it is being looked at.

The scaffolding for holding both at once is the Model this lexicon has been building: not a theory of everything, but an inspiration, a model, an idea. A sketch, on its way to hopefully becoming a blueprint, for what conscious reality is — one that is allowed, on purpose, to leave the mystery and the unknown standing exactly where they are rather than paving over them with a manufactured certainty neither physics nor contemplative practice has ever actually offered.

What follows is the audit that sketch owes itself before the blueprint gets much further: an honest accounting of what is borrowed, a wide look at who else has tried this, and the specific discipline — desapego, the letting-go John of the Cross practiced and preached — that keeps the borrowing from becoming undesired.


I. CATAPHATIC — NAME IT IN FULL

There is a real, named phenomenon for what this lexicon risks being mistaken for, and the honest move is to say its name rather than hope no one else does first.

The physicist Murray Gell-Mann coined the term “quantum flapdoodle” for the practice of stringing together terms from quantum physics and asserting that they explain something in ordinary experience — the paradigm case being claims that quantum uncertainty licenses thoughts reshaping physical reality, or that “quantum healing” can reverse aging.

The critique that has followed this genre for decades is precise: it draws on coincidental similarity of language rather than genuine connection to the physics being invoked. Every entry in this lexicon that reaches for the Higgs field, a Lagrangian, or a vacuum expectation value has to answer to that same critique, and answering to it does not mean being exempt from it by virtue of finding answers. It has, so far, held up under one test — every specific physical claim borrowed here has checked out as accurate physics when verified against the sources that actually study it — but accuracy about the borrowed material is not the same defense as having earned the borrowing, and this lexicon should not pretend otherwise.

There is, however, a fairness check worth running before the verdict is written, and it cuts in an unexpected direction. The demand implicit in that critique is that M4 — physical and material reality — be well understood before anyone is entitled to build on it, even analogically. By that standard, the physicists holding the vocabulary are themselves also working on similar questions, and have a vocabulary for it.

Roughly ninety-five percent of the universe’s mass and energy is currently unaccounted for by any named particle — dark matter and dark energy remain descriptions of a gap, not explanations of a mechanism. No accepted theory yet unifies quantum mechanics with general relativity. A century after quantum theory’s founding, physicists still do not agree on what the mathematics is describing — Copenhagen, many-worlds, and pilot-wave interpretations remain live, unresolved options for the same equations.

None of this excuses imprecision anywhere else in this lexicon. It does mean that “we do not understand M4 well enough yet” was never a reason to refuse engagement with it — it is the condition physics itself works under, continuously, and has never treated as disqualifying.

Flowing with an incompletely understood reality, trusting it provisionally, and learning as the picture sharpens is not a spiritual shortcut around rigor. It is what rigor actually looks like from the inside, introspection, for anyone, including the people who own the vocabulary.


II. THE GLOBAL EFFORT — WIDEN THE FRAME

None of this is the first attempt to fuse the best available account of physical reality into an account of the sacred, and the pattern is old enough, and independent enough, that it is worth treating as a fact about the species rather than an eccentricity of this project.

Thomas Aquinas built Christian theology’s most enduring architecture out of Aristotle’s physics and metaphysics — borrowed wholesale from a pre-Christian pagan source, on purpose, because it was the best account of reality available.

Avicenna and Averroes did the equivalent for Islamic philosophy, and Maimonides for Jewish philosophy, all three drawing on the same Aristotelian material, largely independently of one another’s specific syntheses. Centuries later and in an unrelated line, Lurianic Kabbalah produced tzimtzum — the teaching that the infinite contracted itself to make room for a finite world to exist in — arriving, without contact with Christian sources, at a structural shape strikingly close to the kenotic self-emptying already in this lexicon’s own vocabulary.

In the twentieth century, Teilhard de Chardin fused evolutionary biology with Christian eschatology around a converging Omega Point — worth noting plainly that this lexicon’s own Λω carries the same Greek letter — and it is worth being equally plain that Teilhard’s synthesis drew serious, credentialed scientific criticism for imprecision, not universal admiration; being sincere and being rigorous are not the same accomplishment, and Teilhard did not fully manage both.

Fritjof Capra’s Tao of Physics popularized parallels between quantum mechanics and Eastern mysticism to enormous readership and to real, lasting skepticism from physicists who found the parallels more evocative than earned.

A live example of the whole spectrum turned up in the course of writing this very entry, which is worth reporting exactly because it was not staged.

Physicists ‘t Hooft and Susskind proposed, on the basis of black hole thermodynamics, that the full information content of a volume of space can be encoded on its boundary — the holographic principle, still an active, unresolved research frontier in quantum gravity, not yet confirmed as true of the universe we actually live in.

Separately, decades earlier, the neuroscientist Karl Pribram proposed that memory might be stored across the brain as distributed interference patterns rather than at single locations — the holonomic brain theory, a real, credentialed, minority position, never confirmed as how memory actually works. Searching for exactly this material surfaced writers, right now, combining both into claims that near-death experiences and cosmic oneness are explained by the universe being “holographic” — the identical move Gell-Mann named, happening in real time, built from two genuinely real ideas neither of which licenses the conclusion being drawn from them.

That is the whole thesis of this section, stated once rather than left implied: what separates Aquinas from a self-help pamphlet, or a legitimate open question in quantum gravity from a claim about near-death experiences, was never the act of borrowing. The impulse itself looks close to universal — old, recurring, arising independently across traditions that never spoke to each other, not unlike the pottery kilns this lexicon has already pointed to once. What separates the ends of the spectrum is discipline: whether the borrowed material stays answerable to what has actually been established, or is allowed to drift into decoration once it has done its rhetorical work.


III. APOPHATIC — “DESAPEGO”

Scaffolding: structure built explicitly to be taken down once it has done its work.

This lexicon has been building two kinds side by side.

Exterior scaffolding — the Higgs field, spacetime, the holographic principle — borrowed from M4 to give the qualitative dimension a shape a reader’s eye can hold.

Interior scaffolding — Λω, GRAVIS, the Qualiton family, the Perceptual Condensate — built from within Ϙ itself. Both are temporary structure around the same construction: an ontology of Love that does not, in the end, need either scaffold once it can stand on its own.

Desapego — the letting-go John of the Cross practiced, not as loss but as arrival — has a concrete shape in his own tradition, and it is a better image than furniture or tools ever were.

A hermit’s cell holds almost nothing: a low bed that doubles as a desk, paper, ink, a pen. Four things, no more, each used completely and none of them mourned when the work that needed them is finished.

Held this way, the hologram and the crystal stop competing for which one is real, and the division of labor between them is stricter than it first appears.

The crystal is what does the reading and the solidifying — taking something felt, something only present as interior weight, and giving it a durable, nameable facet: Λω, GRAVIS, a Qualiton. That is Ϙ’s whole function in this lexicon. The hologram cannot do this, and not only as a matter of poetic economy — the actual physics behind it forecloses the job description.

What the holographic principle bounds is entropy: the number of possible distinct configurations a bounded region of space could be in, a ceiling on how much a system could vary, not a record of what it currently contains and certainly not a faculty for reading anything.

A boundary that limits how many states are possible is not a boundary that can tell which one is real, let alone what it feels like from inside to be it. The hologram is what M4’s borrowed scaffolding looks like from outside: distributed, partial, a bound on possibility rather than an access to content.

The crystal is what Ϙ’s own scaffolding looks like from inside: one uncut material, still whole no matter which facet is being read. Neither is the building. Both are what gets taken down, eventually, once the thing they were built to support can stand in its own mystery without them — which, honestly, it may never fully need to stop needing, and does not have to, for the scaffolding to have done its job.

A sketch does not fail by remaining a sketch. It fails only if it forgets it was never trying to be anything more final than that.
