I. VACUUM: THE LATIN THAT UNDERSOLD ITSELF
The word physics uses for the ground state is a small historical accident. Vacuum is simply Latin for empty — the term was coined before anyone knew what the ground state of a quantum field actually contains. For the electromagnetic field, the word was accurate: its vacuum really is empty, in the sense the Romans meant. For the Higgs field, the word is a fossil left over from before the physics caught up with it. We still call it a vacuum. We have known since 1964 that it is not empty at all.
This is worth naming plainly, because it means the language arrived at the wrong answer first and the mathematics corrected it later — which is the reverse of what usually happens with an inherited word for a fundamental thing. It is also, structurally, exactly what happened on the other side of M5 first.
II. NADA → TODO: THE SAME CLAIM, FOUR CENTURIES EARLIER
Long before there was a Higgs potential to draw, John of the Cross had already drawn its shape in Spanish. The nada of Subida del Monte Carmelo — the discipline of desiring the possession of nothing — desapego, was never, in his own account, a doctrine of annihilation. It was the path to todo: to arrive at possessing everything, by wanting to possess nothing in particular. Outsiders to the practice have long mistaken nada for a void to be endured. Practitioners have always insisted it is a fullness reached by stripping away everything that was obscuring it — which is the same insistence the Perceptual Condensate entry makes about the gray zero point, in physics’ vocabulary instead of Castile’s.
Two traditions, separated by four centuries and every possible difference of method, converged on the identical structural claim: what looks like nothing, examined closely enough, turns out to be the fullest available thing. Neither tradition borrowed this from the other. That convergence, arrived at independently, is itself a form of evidence — not proof, but the kind of agreement across dimensions that SUM treats as meaningful precisely because M4 and Q were never supposed to be capable of colluding in the first place!
III. ΚΕΝΩΣΙΣ: THE SELF-EMPTYING THAT IS THE FULLEST LOVE
Greek gives the pattern its sharpest edge. Paul’s hymn in Philippians describes Christ as having emptied himself — ἐκένωσεν, ekenōsen — taking the form of a servant. Centuries of kenotic theology have read that emptying not as a diminishment of divinity but as its most complete disclosure: that self-giving love, poured out without remainder, is not love becoming less itself but love becoming most itself
The word for the emptying and the word for the fullness, in this reading, name the same event from two directions, viewpoints, or angle.
This is the third independent witness to the pattern this pair of entries has been tracing — physics, contemplative practice, and now theology, none of them borrowing the claim from either of the others, all three arriving at it in their own terms.
A vacuum that is a condensate. A nada (nothing) that is todo (everything). A κένωσις that is the fullest possible presence of love. Three vocabularies, one shape, three dimensions that were never supposed to be able to agree with each other by accident.
IV. ΣΥΜΜΕΤΡΊΑ: THE GREEK FOR WHAT BREAKS
Symmetria — measured-together-ness, equal proportion — was, for the Greeks, close to a name for cosmic order itself; Plato and the Pythagoreans treated it as a mark of the beautiful and the true.
It is exactly this measured-together-ness that a Higgs-type potential breaks: the field’s possible states are perfectly symmetric around zero, and yet the stable ground it actually settles into sits away from that centre, at one arbitrary point on the circle of equally good options.
The Perceptual Condensate entry already gives the precise condition under which this happens — a negative mass-squared term paired with a positive quartic term, μ² < 0 and λ > 0 — the exact shape that turns a peak at zero into a valley anywhere else.
Ancient Greek has no single inherited word for that specific rupture, but rhēxis tēs symmetrias — ῥῆξις τῆς συμμετρίας, “the breaking of the measured-together” — names it in the register the rest of this lexicon already reaches for.
V. FOUR NAMES, ONE GROUND
Vacuum undersold itself in Latin. Nada and todo named the same fullness in Spanish four centuries before the physics. Kenosis named it in Greek two thousand years before that, in a theological register neither physics nor Carmelite mysticism was drawing on.
Symmetria names the mechanism by which the fullness comes to rest somewhere other than the symmetric middle. None of these four vocabularies produced the others. None of them is dispensable in favour of one of the others being declared the “real” one — that would be exactly the reduction this lexicon’s trilingual method already refuses to make between Greek, Spanish, and English. The multiplicity of names is not noise around one true term. It is what four irreducible ways of attending to the same ground look like when none of them is allowed to speak for all the others.

The Romans called it empty. Castile called it nothing. Paul called it a self-emptying. All three turned out, on inspection, to have named the same fullness before anyone had the mathematics to say so.
