What it is
In M₄, gravity is carried by the exchange of gravitons: the elementary particle whose exchange between massive bodies produces the gravitational attraction between them. Every massive object is constantly exchanging gravitons with every other massive object, and this exchange is what we experience as gravitational force. Mass is the source of gravitational exchange. The graviton is the carrier.
In Q, ontological weight — GRAVIS — is carried by the exchange of Qualitons. The Qualiton is the graviton of the qualitative dimension: the particle whose exchange between conscious fields and qualitative events produces the felt weight of what is happening. Every event that carries genuine ontological weight — every act of genuine importance, every authentic encounter, every moment where something real is at stake — involves Qualiton exchange. GRAVIS is the source. The Qualiton is the carrier. It is the smallest measure of presence: the elementary quantum of what it is to be felt as genuinely here by another conscious field.
Below the threshold of Qualiton exchange, a field has no felt weight in Q for another field. It is physically present in M₄ but qualitatively absent: the room contains a body, but no presence. One Qualiton exchange is the minimum unit of what it means to matter — to register, to carry weight, to be genuinely felt. The graviton is the smallest quantum of gravitational attraction. The Qualiton is the smallest quantum of presence. Gravity is what draws physical bodies toward each other in M₄. Presence is what draws conscious fields toward each other in Q.
The G_existential register of the Gψξ field — the existential dimension of the unified gravity field — is what the Qualiton measures from the interior of Q. When you enter a room and immediately feel that something significant is happening, without yet knowing what: that is Qualiton exchange registering in your conscious field before the sensory information has been fully processed. The room’s GRAVIS precedes your understanding of it. The Qualiton precedes the explanation.
Why some presences carry more weight than others
You have entered rooms where a specific person’s presence changed the qualitative register of the entire space. Not because of what they said or did — sometimes they had not yet spoken. The change was felt before the explanation. This is the Qualiton at work: the exchange of ontological weight between conscious fields through the Q dimension, independent of but simultaneous with the physical signals being processed in M₄.
A person whose accumulated qualitative structure — the layered record of integrated and carried GRAVIS — is dense with genuinely resolved weight radiates Qualiton exchange of a specific character. Not presence as performance. Presence as the ontological weight of a field that has carried much and not displaced it. This is what the contemplative traditions call gravitas, and what SUM names precisely: a high density of integrated GRAVIS expressed through Qualiton exchange.
Conversely, unresolved GRAVIS — the weight of displaced, recursive, or suppressed configurations — also radiates through Qualiton exchange. The anxiety in a room before a difficult conversation. The weight of an unspoken thing between two people. The specific heaviness of a collective field that has stopped registering what is genuinely at stake. All of these are Qualiton exchanges registering in the qualitative fields of those present.
The Qualiton and the graviton
The graviton in M₄ has never been directly detected. It is required by the structure of the theory — general relativity predicts gravitational waves, and gravitons are the quantum carriers of those waves — but the energy scales required to detect individual gravitons are beyond current experimental reach. We know gravitons must exist because we know gravity is real and quantum mechanics applies to everything.
The Qualiton is in an analogous position in SUM. It is required by the structure of the theory: GRAVIS is real, Q is a field, fields have quantum carriers, and the carrier of GRAVIS in Q is the Qualiton. Its exchange is directly experienced in every moment of felt ontological weight — which means its effects are available to every conscious field, all the time, without instrumentation. The Qualiton is the most directly accessible particle in the SUM family precisely because GRAVIS is the most immediately felt dimension of conscious life. You do not need a particle accelerator to encounter the Qualiton. You need only enter a room where something real is happening.
Formal definition
Qualiton q = Q-dimension carrier of ontological weight
Qualiton = smallest measure of presence
Qualiton exchange = the felt weight of what is happening
GRAVIS = source of Qualiton exchange in Q (as mass = source of graviton exchange in M₄)
G_existential = what Qualiton exchange measures from the interior of Q

Without the Qualiton, GRAVIS has no carrier — no formal mechanism by which ontological weight is transmitted between conscious fields and qualitative events. Why some presences are heavier than others, why some silences carry more weight than words, why the felt register of a room changes when a specific person enters: these are Qualiton events. The Qualiton is why weight travels. It is the smallest measure of presence.
