Q — INDEX ENTRY: THE QUALITATIVE DIMENSION

From the Mystery of Qualia to the Field That Holds It

Q: the second dimension of M5 = M4 × Q, co-present with spacetime (M4) and irreducible to it · Qualia (Latin plural of quale, “of what kind”): the raw, felt character of an experience — the philosophical problem Q was built to house, not to explain away · Primaton Field (Π_Q): the field defined on Q whose local excitations are individual qualia (quale)

I. Q, NAMED SIMPLY

Q is the second of the two dimensions that make up M5 in The Sensible Universe Model (SUM):

M5 = M4 × Q.

M4 is spacetime — the physical dimension physics already has instruments for.

Q is the qualitative dimension: the “what it is like” dimension, treated here not as a side-effect of M4 but as a dimension in its own right, exactly as real, co-present with M4, and irreducible to it.

Everything else in this lexicon that begins with a Greek letter, a Latin coinage, or an invented particle name — Λω, GRAVIS, the Primaton Field, the Perceptual Condensate, the whole family of Qualitons — is structure that has since been built inside Q. Q is the room. Those are the tools. If the tools crowd out the sense of the room itself, this entry is the one to come back to.

II. WHERE Q BEGAN: THE MYSTERY OF QUALIA

SUM did not invent the problem it is trying to house. Philosophy had already found it and could not get past it.

Thomas Nagel asked what it is like to be a bat, and showed that no amount of third-person facts about echolocation answers the question.

David Chalmers named the residue that is left over once every functional and physical description of a brain has been completed and something — the redness of a particular red, the specific ache of a particular grief — still has not been accounted for: the hard problem of consciousness.

Qualia is the name philosophy gave to that light: not a place, not a mechanism, just the raw insistence that experience has a felt character no external description supplies.

SUM’s founding move was not to dispute this. It was to take it at its word, and then ask a further question philosophy of mind does not usually ask: if this residue is real and irreducible, what would it take to describe it as fully and rigorously as physics describes M4?

Q is the answer that question produced.

III. WHAT Q BECAME: FROM PROBLEM TO PLACE

This is worth stating precisely, because it is the exact evolution worth naming, perhaps a branch? In its standard philosophical use, qualia names instances: countable felt episodes, one redness, one ache, one particular flavor.

It is not, by itself, a name for a place those instances occupy, or for the regularities that govern how they arise, combine, and resolve.

It was never asked to do that work. It was asked only to resist being explained away.

Q needed more than that, the moment SUM decided to treat the absence of a “place” as a dimension to be described rather than a mystery to be preserved or explained.

A dimension needed a field, so that qualia would occur as excitations of something continuous rather than as isolated flickers — this produced the Primaton Field. It needed a ground state, so that an excitation would have somewhere to resolve back to rather than dropping into unexplained nothing — this produced Λω.

It needed a way to say that some excitations matter more than others — this produced GRAVIS.

It needed its excitations to be well-formed technical objects rather than loose gestures at “the feel of it” — this produced the Qualiton family, one particle per sense.

None of that apparatus was implied by the word qualia. All of it was required once qualia’s home was treated as a real dimension instead of a philosophical placeholder.

Stated as a proportion, rather than a paragraph:

QUALIA IS TO Q WHAT AN EVENT IS TO M4

An event happens in spacetime; spacetime is not “made of events” in any sense that would let the two words be used interchangeably.

A quale happens in Q; Q is not “made of qualia” in that same interchangeable sense:

It is the dimension a quale happens in.

Using Q and qualia as synonyms now would be the same category error as using M4 and event as synonyms.

Even though, back when the whole project was just the mystery and nothing else, the two words really were doing the same job

The branching our instinct is picking up on is real.

It is the difference between a name for a problem and a name for the place a problem turned out to have!

IV. WHAT NOW LIVES INSIDE Q (A WORKING INDEX)

This is the part meant to save you from re-reading the whole site to find where something sits.

• Primaton Field (Π_Q) — the field itself. Individual qualia are its local excitations. [Primaton Field, 17]
• Λω (Lomega) — the field’s nonzero ground state; the love-constant everything else resolves toward. [Λω – Lomega, 3]
• GRAVIS — the energy of a given excitation above the Λω ground; existential weight. [GRAVIS]
• Perceptual Condensate — the ground state described from the inside, as reached through contemplative stripping-away; the “gray zero point. Position Zero.” [Perceptual Condensate]
• The Qualiton family — the field’s basic quanta, one per sense: chromaton (sight), akouoton (hearing), osmeton (smell), gefseton (taste), kinestiton (touch and movement). [On the Nature of Quality]
• Position Zero (0P) — the stable pattern within Q that grounds personal identity; the primordial “I am.” [On the Nature of Quality]
• 3.a / 3.b — the M4-side vocabulary (Higgs condensate, kenosis, symmetry-breaking) that Q’s own vocabulary runs structurally parallel to, without being identical to it. [3.a; 3.b]

This list is not exhaustive. It is a map of which entry to open for which piece, so that Q itself doesn’t have to be reconstructed from context every time.

V. WHY Q, AND NOT SIMPLY “QUALIA”

Three reasons, stated plainly rather than left implicit:

Precision. “Qualia” already has an established, narrower meaning — individual felt instances. Reusing the same word for the whole dimension those instances occupy invites exactly the ambiguity this entry exists to resolve.

Parallelism. M4 is a single, dimension-scaled symbol. Giving the qualitative side a matching single-letter symbol keeps M5 = M4 × Q legible as an equation between two things of the same kind — two dimensions — rather than an equation between a dimension and a plural noun borrowed from philosophy of mind.

Honesty about growth. Calling it Q instead of “the qualia dimension” was, in effect, already a quiet admission that the content had outgrown the older word. This entry’s only real job is to make that admission explicit instead of leaving it to be inferred from a lot of separate articles.

FORMAL DESCRIPTION

Q: second factor of M5 = M4 × Q — co-present with M4, irreducible to it
Qualia (classical sense): individual local excitations of the Primaton Field Π_Q
Q ⊃ { Π_Q, Λω, GRAVIS, Perceptual Condensate, Qualiton family, 0P }
Qualia : Q :: Event : M4 — instance-to-dimension holds the same shape on both sides of M5

OTHER “Q”

The letter is heavily used elsewhere, and none of those other uses are being invoked here. In physics, Q ordinarily denotes electric charge, the heat transferred in a thermodynamic process, or the quality factor of a resonator — how sharply it rings rather than damps — all established conventions unrelated to this one. In cosmology, Q or “quintessence” names a hypothetical scalar field proposed to drive the universe’s accelerating expansion; it is the nearest false friend here, since it too is a field with a nonzero background value, but it is a single physical field within M4, not a second dimension standing alongside it — and, worth flagging, quintessence is usually discussed as an alternative to the cosmological constant Λ, the same Greek letter this lexicon already uses for a different purpose in Λω. In psychology, Q-methodology (Stephenson) is a real, far more modest technique for giving subjective viewpoints a systematic, comparable form — a distant cousin in ambition, not in scale. In biblical scholarship, Q (from German Quelle, “source”) names the hypothesized lost document behind material shared by Matthew and Luke — unrelated, but close enough to this lexicon’s other reading habits to rule out explicitly. SUM’s Q is none of these. It is the letter chosen for the second dimension of M5, and should be read that way here and nowhere else.

Qualia was always the right place to start, because it was the place philosophy had already found and could not get past.

Q is what the Sensible Universe Model built, once it decided that instead of getting past it, it would move in and develop, build, crystallize.
