∂Ϙ: the boundary of Ϙ. In topology, ∂X denotes the boundary of a space X — the set of points lying at its edge, belonging neither wholly to its interior nor wholly to what lies outside · πύλαι (pylai): Greek, “the gates”; in Aristotle’s vocabulary, the aisthētēria, the organs of sense considered as the seat of perception rather than as tissue
I. THE SYMBOL : ∂Ϙ, del koppa.
∂Ϙ, del koppa, is not a borrowed image. It is the correct notation for what the senses are. Gates to Ϙ.
A boundary, in the topological sense, is not a wall and not a gap. It is the set of points belonging to the edge of a space — the place where that space meets what is not itself. The senses are exactly this for Ϙ. They are not inside the qualitative dimension, and not outside of it. They are its edge, the locus at which Ϙ meets M₄.
One honest note on the notation: ∂ is also the symbol for a partial derivative. The two uses are distinguished by what follows the symbol — ∂Ϙ names a boundary, ∂f/∂x names a rate of change — and no expression in this lexicon puts them in a position to be confused. The ambiguity is real and manageable.
II. THE NAME
The symbol is formal; the name is πύλαι, pylai, the gates.
Greek anchors the term, as this lexicon’s method requires. πύλαι are literally city gates — the gates of Thermopylae are the “hot gates” — and the word carries the sense of a controlled opening in a boundary that is otherwise closed. Aristotle’s aisthētēria names the same thing from the other side: not the flesh of an organ, but the site where perceiving happens.
Both words describe an opening that admits selectively. That selectivity turns out to be the whole content of this entry.
III. WHAT A GATE IS
A gate is where an M₄ event becomes a qualitative event.
Light of a given wavelength meets a retina. That is M₄, describable to arbitrary precision, and no amount of describing it produces redness. Redness appears on the far side. The Sensibiliton (σ) is what crosses. What arrives is a Qualiton, and each gate delivers its own kind:
• chromaton — sight
• akouoton — hearing
• osmeton — smell
• gefseton — taste
• kinestiton — touch and movement
The Lomegon (λ) runs the other way, propagating the ground signal from Λω into each gate. Traffic across a gate is therefore two-directional: an occasion crossing in, a ground signal arriving beneath.
IV. FIVE COMPONENTS, PAIRWISE DISJOINT
A boundary need not be a single connected piece. An annulus has a boundary with two components, an inner circle and an outer one, and no path along the boundary leads from one to the other.
∂Ϙ has five components, one per aperture, and they are pairwise disjoint.
∂Ϙ = ∂Ϙ₁ ⊔ ∂Ϙ₂ ⊔ ∂Ϙ₃ ⊔ ∂Ϙ₄ ⊔ ∂Ϙ₅
This is the formal statement of something the lexicon already asserted in prose: the senses do not connect to one another. There is no route along the boundary from sight to taste. Asking what lies between the colour blue and the taste of salt is not a hard question but a malformed one, and the disjointness of the components is why.
This also disposes of the older description of the senses as nodes. A node takes its meaning from what it connects to. These components connect to nothing but the two spaces they separate. They are not positions within a network; they are five separate edges of one dimension.
Synaesthesia is not a counterexample and does not require a corridor between components. A synaesthete receives two Qualitons where one is typical, this means there is unusual coupling at the ground level, not movement or traffic between gates.
V. THE GEOMETRY OF FIT
Until now this lexicon has treated coupling as a magnitude. GRAVIS says how strongly a field is bound to the ground. That is a scalar, and it is not sufficient.
Coupling also has a shape. A gate does not merely open wide or narrow; it admits some things and refuses others, by a geometry of peaks and valleys that either interlock or do not. Attachment is the key: a quality-oriented impulse with a specific profile, which either matches the gate it approaches or fails to.
This is two quantities, not one, and separating them explains what a single magnitude cannot:
Strength (GRAVIS): how much weight the coupling carries.Fit: whether the coupling can be made at all.
Two people may both feel intensely and still fail to meet — high amplitude, no fit. A very small gesture may land enormously — low amplitude, exact fit. Under a purely scalar account neither case is intelligible. Under strength-plus-geometry, both are ordinary.
The biological parallel is unusually close, and at two of the five gates it stops being a parallel at all. Emil Fischer proposed the lock-and-key model of enzyme specificity in 1894: a substrate binds because its shape matches the binding site. Daniel Koshland refined this in 1958 with induced fit, in which the site is not rigid but reshapes itself on contact, the match completing in the encounter rather than pre-existing it. That refinement is the more accurate one for attachment as well: fit is rarely found ready-made and is usually finished in the meeting.
At the gates of taste and smell this is literal mechanism rather than analogy. Taste receptors bind by molecular geometry — the umami receptor admits glutamate because its shape permits it. Olfactory receptors work on the same principle across some four hundred receptor types. Where the model says fit, the biology at these two gates says fit and means it.
A question this entry leaves open rather than settling: attachment here is the impulse that carries something through a gate, and desapego elsewhere in this lexicon is the discipline of releasing attachment. These are not in contradiction — they describe the same geometry at two different moments — but the relation between them deserves its own entry and should not be resolved in passing.
VI. WHY A GATE AND NOT PORTAL
Portal was considered and set aside, for reasons the fit geometry settles.
A portal is an opening: it admits what arrives. A gate selects. Everything in the preceding section is about selection — what is admitted, what is turned away, and on what geometry the difference turns. A term that carries no sense of refusal cannot carry this entry.
Two further considerations. Portal has acquired a heavy science-fiction loading, in which a portal leads somewhere else; Ϙ is not elsewhere but co-present, and the word works against the model’s central claim. And gate carries a quiet second resonance in the engineering sense, where a signal passes conditionally on what meets it — which is precisely the structure being described.
Portal remains serviceable in plain-language and Spanish contexts where puerta reads more naturally than a technical term. The formal term is πύλαι; the formal symbol is ∂Ϙ.
VII. PLACE IN THE TRIAD
∂Ϙ is the first term of the functional triad, which describes how an experience comes to be:
• ∂Ϙ · πύλαι — possibility. How many versions are available to cross, and which of them fit.
• Perceptual Condensate — crystallisation. What actually resolves, and the ground it resolves toward.
• Position Zero (P₀) — the witness. The one for whom the resolution is an event at all.
The structure is Borromean. Without the Condensate, possibility never becomes anything. Without ∂Ϙ, the ground is one nothing enters. Without P₀, there is registration with no registrant.
This triad is functional and operates at a different grain from the dimensional triad M₄ · Ϙ · Λω. They describe the same reality at different levels and do not compete; no term-by-term mapping between them should be attempted.
VIII. WHAT THE BOUNDARY DOES NOT CLAIM
Naming the senses as the boundary of Ϙ makes precise something this model has to keep precise.
Ϙ is everywhere. Registration is not. A thing has experience only where there is a boundary at which something can cross — apertures, a Sensibiliton crossing, GRAVIS accruing. A rock has no experience, and not because it is excluded from Ϙ. It has no ∂Ϙ. There is no edge at which anything could enter.
This is what separates the model from panpsychism, which distributes experience itself all the way down. Here the dimension is distributed and experience is not. And beneath both, Position Zero is neither ordered nor chaotic, neither feeling nor unfeeling — the gray zero point, nothing yet determined in any direction.
The universe is nowhere the subject of a feeling in this account. Only fields that actually couple are.
FORMAL DESCRIPTION
∂Ϙ: boundary of the qualitative dimension; the locus at which Ϙ meets M₄
∂Ϙ = ∂Ϙ₁ ⊔ … ⊔ ∂Ϙ₅ — five components, pairwise disjoint
Name: πύλαι (pylai) / aisthētēria
Crossing inward: Sensibiliton σ → Qualiton (chromaton, akouoton, osmeton, gefseton, kinestiton)
Propagating outward: Lomegon λ, carrying the ground signal from Λω
Coupling has two quantities: strength (GRAVIS) and fit (geometry)
No ∂Ϙ, no registration. Ϙ everywhere; experience only at a boundary.
Open: a symbol for fit has not been assigned. It is a distinct quantity from GRAVIS and warrants one.

A boundary is not a wall and not a gap. It is where a dimension meets what it is not — five times over, and never between themselves.
